Following a study, Snyder & Associates prepared a comprehensive drinking water treatment development plan for the Iowa National Guard. A study was completed to determine the best course of action to take in replacing the Guard’s existing water treatment facility due to the condition of the plant. Planning included a focus on improved quality water with capacity for the future and added flexibility to meet future water quality regulations.
The study included an evaluation of existing water treatment system facilities and demands, current and anticipated regulatory requirements, and possible water treatment alternatives. Two alternatives analyzed in-depth included lime softening and an ion exchange process similar to the existing plant. Equipment sizing, functional plan view layouts and elevations, and construction costs estimates for both alternatives were completed. Operational cost estimates for each alternative were also provided to aid in determining which alternative would be more economical. Other related water system components, such as the wells, finished water ground storage reservoir, and lime sludge lagoon and force main were included in the study.
The preferred alternative called for the construction of a new lime softening plant and clearwell adjacent to the existing water treatment plant, upgrades to both existing wells, construction of lime sludge lagoons, and a 150,000-gallon ground storage reservoir.
With project funding secured, design of a 0.7 MGD water treatment facility began in 2005. The project had multiple phases including client participation, schematic design, design development, final design, and construction management. The new facilities became operational in 2006.
