Innovative & Diverse System of Public Outreach

Our project team was presented the 2016 Award of Merit in the Planning & Analysis Category by the Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for the Northwest River District Revitalization Plan for the City of Fort Dodge, Iowa. As the prime consultant for this project, we selected a specific team to work with the neighborhood planning team and city staff to facilitate public engagement and develop and prepare a cohesive revitalization plan for the neighborhood.

“We’re excited to assist the City of Fort Dodge in their efforts to change their community from one of declining population and tax base to one of positive growth and sustainability. The project has resounding support by the neighborhood residents, business owners, and elected officials. Tim West’s excellent leadership fostered excitement from our staff, our client, and affected stakeholders.”  — Wade A. Greiman, Project Engineer

We helped the planning team and city identify challenges a neighborhood in northwestern Fort Dodge was facing, despite its proximity to the Des Moines River and a strong connection to Highway 169. We developed an implementable revitalization plan with strategies and tactics for addressing the identified challenges.  A key component of the scope and revitalization plan was to encourage collaboration where public and private partnerships can flourish and create a vision to encourage:

  • Reinvestment and redevelopment
  • Benefits for existing and future landowners
  • Spurs in economic growth and community revitalization
  • Building and expanding local community member partnerships

Our innovative approach to community engagement and effective listening skills fed into the development of a revitalization plan for the area known as the Northwest River District. Nearly 1,500 people live in this neighborhood and a great number were active in the development of the plan. Our strengths in graphic design, infrastructure design, and recreational facilities planning were supported by a Market Assessment that guided plan development.
